Established in the 19th century, the firm of Karl August Ferdinand Hahn were producing fine enough wares to receive the Imperial Warrant. Chosen to create the coronation crown for Empress Alexandra Feodorovna in 1896 they have been described as 'the greatest rival to Faberge', (Watts, Geoffrey, 'Russian Silversmiths' Hallmarks 1700-1917', Gemini Publications 2006, p.25).
The goldsmith Carl Blank was Hahn's head workmaster from 1882 to 1909, working thereafter in partnership with Hahn and then independently supplying the Cabinet directly.
